Many vehicle and transmission manufacturers commonly use marketing statements, "lifetime fluid" and "sealed for life" in their owner or service manuals. Consequently, many vehicle and transmission manufacturer maintenance schedules may no longer suggest a transmission fluid change interval.
For Tesla Model 3/Model Y vehicles that are tracked/driven aggressively or those that simply want peace of mind that comes with regularly changing fluid, we have put together this fluid service kit for you.
Fluid Capacity/Kit Contents
Model 3/Model Y (Standard/RWD): 3 liters ATF9 and 1 Filter
Model 3/Model Y (LR/Performance): 5 liters ATF9 and 2 Filters
Rear Drive Unit is ~2.75L, while the Front Drive Unit is slightly smaller capacity at ~1.75L. Measuring the amount of fluid evacuated from the FDU to ensure proper amount refilled, also factoring in filter capacity.
The statements “Lifetime, Lifetime Fill, Fill for Life, or Sealed for Life” used by manufacturers, is typically understood to indicate the fluid/filter will last the lifetime of the vehicle while under warranty. However, these statements tend to create some misconceptions that may lead to neglecting the maintenance of the drive unit. It may also not reflect the important need to change the drive unit fluid in order to achieve long-term reliability of your Tesla's drive unit well beyond the warranty period.
