KMP has designed aftermarket racing wheels to replace the original OEM steering wheel. The original steering wheel has normally an airbag and is designed for driver comfort. To meet the racing requirements, KMP has developed racing steering wheels for several BMW models.
There are two different models available. The most used model has four free to use switches . A ‘Free to Use’ button can be used for anything you want. These buttons are switched to ground, and can be used with the supplied flying leads. The flying leads are connected into the back of the slip ring (dashboard side). Connect an external timer, flash light or anything you would like to control directly from your racing wheel. The wiring for each custom function needs to be done by the customer. The other models have only two paddles, and no Free to Use switches. The plug and play solution makes sure no airbag light will turn on after installation.
KMP Racing Steering Wheel Advantage
- Better grip and feedback for driver: The 330mm three-spoke Suede steering wheel is designed for motorsport usage. The paddles give a solid feedback when pressed.
- Additional buttons: The sandwich plate has additional buttons which can be used for radio communication or any other function. All electronics are designed for the harsh environment of motorsport.
- Replaceable and reversible: Due to the plug and play design, the original steering wheel can be refitted without problem.
- Quick release: With the quick release adapter the steering wheel can be removed using just a single hand.
- No warnings from ECU or controller: Fully CAN-integrated, the plug and play kit will avoid any change on error messages from the ECU or controller. The vehicle electronics will not notice a different steering wheel or an airbag missing.
If an OEM steering wheel is removed, there will be several errors active. The racing wheel has specially developed electronics inside which simulate the OEM wheel and retain horn function.
Adapter Options
Spacer
This is the standard fixed 44mm spacer. This will be mounted between the steering wheel and the steering hub. It is equipped with a curly cable to connect it to the in-car electronics. This option is often chosen because of regulations or to reduce costs. If a curly cable (instead of through spacer wiring) is preferred, please add a note at checkout.

Quick Release
When the wheel is equipped with a quick release, a plate stays on the steering hub, but your wheel can be easily taken off. It is also equipped by a curly cable with the in-car electronics. This option is often chosen because of easy accessibility reasons. With the curly cable, the wheel can be detached but not taken out of the car completely.

Quick Release with Connector
The quick release with integrated connector is used without a curly cable. The connector can be connected to the electronics of the car. The connection is made inside the quick release/wheel hub. The curly cable turns with the wheel hub. It doesn’t get tangled around the wheel, and it doesn’t even hit the indicators/cruise control/wipers.

The KMP BMW E46 M3 Racing Steering Wheel is standard equipped with a 44mm spacer. It is possible to replace the spacer with an optional quick release adapter at additional costs. Both Spacer/Quick Release will have a curly cable between the steering wheel and the hub. A Quick Release with Integrated Connector can also be selected.

Function Names
The function names can be laser engraved in the steering wheel. If the additional functions on the ‘Free to Use’ switches are already known, please add this as a note to the order. If the Free to Use function names are not supplied at order, there will not by any engraving at these switch positions
